Hello guys, I'm not one that spends much time on the forums, but I need to post this. For the last four months I have encountered problems with the
3M PPF.
1) I have been noticing on a widely scattered pattern some fish eye looking drops in the film. Both 18" and 24"
2) Inconsistant Clear Coat finishes that will have unusally higher orange peel look that is insonsistant on the roll of film and glossier look in other areas. (Mostly on 18" film for my hood kits.)
3) UGLY looking "V" shaped clear coat or 'eurethane drips that are scattered from top to bottom of either the 18" or 24" rolls of film in a spaced pattern of about 20" apart. This is the worst problem I have with the film issues. These marks are bumps in the material that is vertually unnoticable on paper. As soon as you put it on any colored finish other than white and silver, it jumps out at you like you missed a squeege stroke and left water behind. The lot numbers for this problem are 10085 018-3 and 10085 045-2. MFG date 5/19 & 21/2010. These are 18" rolls of PPF. I have had the same issues with the 24" as well but have been very lucky with those rolls since most of those cuts are bumpers. I did have to replace 2 Porcshe hoods "cause I cut them on 24". In the last four months I have gone through 8 boxes of both sizes of PPF, and have had the "V" shaped problems in 5 of the boxes. Like I said, I have been very lucky getting away with using the 24", but I am tired of my 3M Rep not getting a handle on this matter. I want to know who the lead Q.C. person is at 3M for this department so I can have a long conversation with them about how lame they are when it comes to "us" "the end user" trying to make a living installing crap on a customers' car that just spent $800+ at a dealership, and we get kick in the butt for using bad material.
The part thats gets me more ticked off is that I keep hearing "We have not found that problem." I have given back samples to send to the lab!!
I have been asking a lot of questions about these issues and have found out that some of the smaller rolls of film are cut from flawed larger rolls and get shipped out for us to discover the smaller problems missed by the Q.C. department. That SUCKS!!!
So I ask you guys. Has anyone else had this issue??? If so speek up LOUDLY. your time and money is being wasted by a understaffed, tired team of line workers at 3M.
Thank you,
Chicago Illinois
We've only had issues with one or two rolls of film, both 18", which seems about to have happened early this year. No problems lately. Sorry to hear your problems.
I'm going to be anxiously waiting for a reply from the 3M reps to see what this problem has been manufacturing the film.
Over the past week, we have spoken with a number of our Chicago-based customers to understand film quality concerns. We sincerely appreciate the open communication. As a result of these discussions, we now have a greater appreciation for each other’s challenges. 3M works hard to produce consistent, high quality films that meets our customers’ requirements.
3M utilizes manual and automated visual inspection systems to identify and remove defects. We maintain highly effective quality assurance systems, though it is possible that quality issues can from time to time arise and, when they do, prompt action is essential. We have had further internal 3M discussions with manufacturing and quality to identify the root causes of film defects mentioned previously. Solutions that are appropriate, will be implemented in order to continually improve our film.
We welcome and sincerely appreciate constructive and timely feedback from our customers.
